“Fanfare” by DS Maolalai

I piss. it feels ok
and then after I walk
through the house going back
to the kitchen.
and you are not here
in any of the house,
or at least you are not
in my parts of it.
the dog is.
she wags to see me,
but doesn’t get up
or acknowledge me otherwise – I like that.
we live together – it’s not like I need
any fanfare.

and autumn has given way to winter
suddenly with coldness,
like someone’s garage
and a roof
and heavy wet snow.

DS Maolalai has been nominated nine times for Best of the Net and five times for the Pushcart Prize. His poetry has been released in two collections, “Love is Breaking Plates in the Garden” (Encircle Press, 2016) and “Sad Havoc Among the Birds” (Turas Press, 2019)
